Greek Mythology: The Gods, the Heroes, and the Tragic Houses NEW

Achilles fights Hector. Made in Athens about 500-480 BC. From British Museum collection.

Come join us for a fast-paced, whirlwind tour of the magic world of Greek mythology. In three weeks, explore the deeper meanings of these old, old tales and assess their relevance for us today.

WEEK I. THE GODS AND HEROES OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY

Learn the origins and relationships of all the major gods, the mythological causes of the Trojan War, the tragic fall of the house of Atreus, and much, much more.

WEEK II. THE HEROES OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY: JASON, PERSEUS, THESEUS, AND HERACLES

Examine the lives of the four greatest mythic heroes of ancient Greece: Perseus, Jason, Theseus, and Heracles. Watch breathlessly as Medusa, the Golden Fleece, and the Minotaur are conjured up before for your very eyes! Thrill to the drama and passion of these larger-than-life heroes! Sigh aloud as you see them make their tragic choices!

WEEK III. THE FAMILY THAT SLAYS TOGETHER: THE TRAGIC HOUSE OF THEBES

Take an in-depth look at one of the most famous (and infamous) cities and families in the annals of Greek mythology. Watch with bated breath us as we explore the tragic lives of such mythical figures as Cadmus, Actaeon, Pentheus, Dionysus, Oedipus, and Antigone and uncover in their fates a recurring thread of civil war and uncontrolled passion. The talk will include a dramatic retelling of three of the greatest tragedies of Western Civilization: The Bacchae of Euripides and the Oedipus and Antigone of Sophocles.
